Sometimes the iconic scenes in well-known films have been the most difficult to shoot behind the scenes, and we don’t even know it. Here are some scenes that almost made actors do a complete 180.

Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant

Leonardo DiCaprio has been very open about his stand as a vegetarian and his dislike for factory farming. Still, his role in The Revenant pushed him to do questionable things to make scenes more powerful and realistic. Poor Leo had to eat a huge chunk of raw Bison liver on screen, probably one of the hardest things he had to do for a character. The degree of torture he had to experience on set just shows how devoted he is to his craft. He almost didn’t do it —  but when he did, it got himself an Oscar.

Johnny Depp – What’s Eating Gilbert Grape

Johnny Depp is so used to whimsical and out-of-the-box characters that when it came to a role that hits a bit close to home, he is somehow out of his element. He did not like his character at all. So when it came to scenes where Depp would insult his on-screen mother with remarks referring to the degree of her weight and appearance, he is less than happy about it. Pair that with a lacking script, and you get one unimpressed Depp.

Jim Carrey – How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Jim Carrey portrayed the Grinch so impeccably that it is still praised up to this day. He got it all down from the posture, the voice, and the exaggerated facial expressions. He made us laugh, and he made us cry during the whole movie, but did you know he almost quit on the role. Who wouldn’t? Imagine spending hours and hours on hair and make-up. Now that just seems unfortunate and incredibly uncomfortable. He deserves credit for being a good sport and finishing the movie.

Mike Meyers – Wayne’s World

Mike Meyers is a visionary, and when he wants things done a certain way to a specific scene, it is best to give it a chance because it might turn out to be one of the best scenes in a movie. Meyers tookcreditfor being the creative writer of the film and wanted to rock out to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and almost walked out off the set when the studio almost denied him. It remains one of the most iconic scenes of all time. He even played Ray Foster in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody.

Michelle Pfeiffer -Batman Returns

Latex. Latex. And… more latex. Michelle Pfeiffer enjoyed playing the powerful and seductive antihero, but when it came to the dressing room, she complained of the costume’s discomfort. She even had to voice out her concerns when scheduling her scenes because she could only be in the suit for a specific amount of time. She takescredit for the patience she gives into putting on the costume — even if it made her chafe like crazy!

Keanu Reeves – Knock Knock

People hardly ever see Keanu Reeves in intimates scenes, so it’s no surprise that the actor was shocked and uncomfortable too. However, he is an actor. He shouldn’t be embarrassed — well, not if your on-screen partner is the director’s wife. Reeve’s was uncomfortable, to say the least, but he went on with it without a glitch because he is a pro. Everyone kept it professional, and it was shot. Kudos to the team! They sure deserve credit for their professionalism.

Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road

Kate Winslet has always had great on-screen chemistry with Leonardo DiCaprio ever since Titanic. However, during the filming of Revolutionary Road, it was not easy to shoot romantic scenes with DiCaprio when her then-husband,Sam Mendes, was directing them. Mendes was not affected one bit and just kept on shooting — ultimately helping his wife win her Golden Globe for Best Actress. We’d say their investment in the film paid off in the end.

Daisy Ridley: The Force Awakens

Is it constructive criticism when you almost self-destruct? Daisy Ridley takes credit for being one of the actresses who get to keep the Star Wars name alive, which is a huge responsibility. We all have our bad days. Unfortunately for Ridley, during a not-so-good take, the director slipped her a comment saying her performance lacked a bit of life, causing her to almost spiral into panic. Proving later on that she did a marvelous job portraying Rey.
